MOOD DISORDERS

We all feel sad from time to time, so what does it mean when we have a depressive disorder?

SYMPTOMS OF A DEPRESSIVE DISORDER

We all feel sadness and a depressed mood from time to time. When sadness and being in a depressed state persist longer and feel more intense over time with minimal respite, it is possible that a mood disorder/dysregulation is at play. Our work together comprised of being more aware of internal states and cues preceding a depressive episode, developing strategies to alleviate symptoms accompanying a depressive episode, and gaining insight into our own bodies and in our environment that might trigger/exacerbate depressive symptoms.

COPING WITH RUMINATIVE THOUGHTS

Ruminative thoughts comprised of persistent thoughts and beliefs that perpetuate thoughts of worthlessness, helplessness, and isolation. This may happen in concordance with feeling sad, depressed, bitter, irritation, and/or anger. While it is normal and vital that we feel all of our emotions, it could be destabilizing to be feeling intense emotions and be having self-defeating thoughts constantly. Our work will be on finding a balance; how we acknowledge our thoughts and beliefs while working on gently steering towards a narrative that is more humanistic, compassionate, and less punitive.
