About Me

My name is Dr. Terence Tsien Li Yee, a clinical mental health counselor in the Greater Philadelphia area. I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Education and Counseling at Villanova University. I completed my PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision at the University of North Texas in 2017.

I have experience counseling individuals ranging from age 3 - 65 years old. With young children ages 3 - 8/9 years old, I utilize play therapy (see the play therapy page for more info). With adolescent and adults, I use a combination of talk therapy and expressive arts therapy (e.g. music, sandtray, and other experiential activities). Brain science indicates that our right brain is responsible for creative activities whereas our left brain is responsible for logical thinking. By combining both talk therapy and expressive arts therapy, I am promoting the integration between the two brain hemispheres, which leads to healing.

My counseling style is mainly humanistic, believing that you have the capability and strength within you to change for the better. I believe that mental health symptoms are caused by individuals feeling discouraged in life, which is typically rooted in traumatic and/or oppressive experiences. Consequently, the counseling process will be focused on understanding and processing your traumatic experiences while providing you with encouragement. At opportune moments, I may provide psychoeducation to supplement our counseling process.

As an immigrant from Malaysia, I am especially interested in discussing acculturative stress with international students and immigrants. I am also passionate about working with faculty experiencing burnout or stressors related to academia. Other areas of expertise include parenting, children's mental health, racial identity and trauma, depression, traumatic experiences, anxiety, and self-esteem. I can converse in English, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Bahasa Malaysia.
