EATING DISORDERS AND DISORDERED EATING

Eating disorders and disordered eating come in many forms, from restricting food and fluid intake, excessive exercising, to food-related binges. Common medical diagnoses are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder. It could also show up in subtler ways, such as skipping meals here and there to lose a few pounds, a strong preoccupation with body image and ways to control the perception of how the body looks, and engaging in frequent diets and eating trends.

One of the overarching themes of eating disorders is the sense of feeling overwhelmed with urges to control the body image and to manipulate weight, akin with the intensity of losing control and being tunneled-vision from other important areas of your life, to engaging in behaviors ranging from the descriptions in the section above to self-harm behaviors and self-isolation, and the fraying of important relationships in your life.

Our work together will be about exploring the underlying meaning of the urges and behaviors, collaborating on ways to eliminate the urges and behaviors, exploring values and life goals, and working towards value-consistent behaviors and lifestyles that does not involve eating disorders or disordered eating behaviors. It is about learning to trust again; to develop trust in your body and your mind, to feed your soul, and to form a better relationship with your body and with others around you.
