WHAT IS PLAY THERAPY?

Play Therapy

Children, just as adults, can and do experience strong emotions. Incidents such as being bullied at school, changes to family composition, automobile accident, and racial trauma may evoke strong feelings from children. However, unlike adults, children may not have the words to process their emotions. Thus, play therapy, rather than talk therapy, is used with young children.

Play therapy is a powerful modality to assist children in successfully processing their experiences. Play therapy is best for children ages 3 - 8/9 years old. Because all children play, play is regarded as their language and toys are their words.

Play therapy has been found to be effective in treating a variety of issues including children's aggressiveness, inattention, anxiety, depression, traumatic experiences, and self-esteem. An important part of healing includes active participation by caregivers. Caregivers who are willing to adjust their behavior when relating to their child will produce the best results.
