WHY SHOULD THERAPY MATTER?

Bloom

"Does this support the life I am trying to create?" is a question we ask ourselves every day. We believe that life is invaluable and everyone should have a space in which they feel deeply heard and validated. This is exemplified in the work we do. We do not believe that there is only one way forward in this journey of healing but the core principles are present; our therapeutic relationship should foster a safe, accepting, and collaborative space by exploring resilience, strengths, and informed curiosity. We strive to facilitate self-empowerment and self-efficacy through adaptive coping/behavioral skills, strengthening cognitive insight, while honoring that change is hard AND the human potential for growth. We believe that individuals can grow in a nurturing environment, despite having experienced trauma. Therapy typically takes place in the form of a deep conversation and psychological work between the therapist and client in the form of 55-60 minutes sessions conducted weekly. We will have an intake session and discuss treatment plans, working collaboratively on implementing treatment to ensure that that treatment goals are met.

What is therapy/counseling?

For some, the concept of counseling or therapy is foreign. So, what exactly is counseling?

Counseling is a personal journey to lead a more fulfilling life. This usually entails talking to a professional mental health about your worries, fears, and stressors.

The counseling process may look different due to your needs. Some may use counseling to grieve a loss of loved one, to change a behavior, and/or to process their traumatic experiences (e.g. near-death experience, racism, abuse, etc.).

If you are experiencing distress and would like to feel better, counseling may be appropriate for you. Feel free to reach out to us!

How does therapy/counseling look like?

So, how does counseling/therapy looks like?

The counseling process can be simplified into four distinct phases:

In the first phase, we aim to build a therapeutic relationship characterized by warmth, care, and compassion. Research has shown that the therapeutic relationship has consistently been a predictor of positive client outcomes (i.e. the better the relationship, the more likely you will get better).

In the second phase, we aim to understand how your life experiences have influenced your thoughts, emotions, and behavior.

After understanding your life experiences, the next step is to assist you in getting insights into your own decisions. What makes you happy, sad, and/or act in a certain manner?

Lastly, we work on implementing a more productive behavior change based on the insights gained.

Although the counseling process can be non-linear, we hope that this provides a snapshot to how counseling works.
